We are looking for a Senior Materials Scientist with deep expertise in carbon materials and a strong interest in bio-based and sustainable technologies.
In this role, you will lead and contribute to advanced R&D on next-generation carbon materials derived from renewable sources, supporting the development of fossil-free solutions for applications in batteries, metallurgy, and other high-performance sectors.
You will join a multidisciplinary team working at the interface between materials science, chemistry, and industrial innovation. The position combines hands-on experimental work with conceptual process development, offering the opportunity to translate scientific insight into practical technologies that enable large-scale decarbonization.
Our mission is to accelerate the green transition by developing sustainable carbon materials that can replace fossil-based graphite in key industrial applications. Europe’s growing demand for strategic materials requires new, domestic, and climate-friendly solutions - this role contributes directly to that goal.
Key responsibilities
· Design and execute R&D programs focused on the development and optimization of bio-based carbon materials
· Plan and conduct laboratory and pilot-scale experiments related to carbon upgrading, conversion, and material performance
· Characterize and analyze materials using advanced techniques (XRD, SEM, Raman, BET, PSD, XPS, etc.)
· Interpret data and translate results into process improvements, new materials concepts, and performance validation
· Develop and refine experimental methods, analytical protocols, and quality control procedures
· Contribute to process design, modeling, and scale-up studies in collaboration with engineers and technical partners
· Engage with academic and industrial collaborators on joint R&D activities and material qualification projects
· Monitor research, technology, and market developments in carbon materials and related fields to inform innovation strategy
· Mentor researchers and help develop internal R&D capabilities
Qualifications
· PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or a closely related field
· Expertise in carbon materials, such as graphite, carbon black, or biochar
· Demonstrated experience with laboratory and pilot-scale experimentation, including materials synthesis and process optimization
· Strong practical skills in materials characterization and data interpretation
· Experience in process modeling and techno-economic analysis
· Proven ability to bridge fundamental research and industrial application
· Track record of developing and validating new materials or processes in an R&D environment
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and reproducibility
· Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and applied research partnerships
Beneficial experience
· Experience with bio-based carbon feedstocks or conversion processes
· Familiarity with graphite and its applications in batteries, metallurgy, or conductive materials
· Published research in the field of carbon materials, graphitization, or sustainable process design
· Experience contributing to or managing collaborative research projects (e.g., EU or national funding programs)
This is an opportunity to apply your scientific expertise to real-world impact, contributing to the development of sustainable carbon materials that underpin Europe’s green industrial transition. You will play a key role in advancing research that bridges science and application, shaping the next generation of bio-based graphite alternatives.

We are looking for an experienced engineering leader with a proven track record of establishing new production plants, from design and construction to commissioning and operation. In this role, you will lead the industrial scale-up of our graphite production facility and build the organization required for large-scale, sustainable manufacturing.
As part of the top management team, you will play a key role in shaping both strategy and execution as the company transitions from pilot production to commercial scale. The position includes an equity program designed to provide meaningful ownership in the company’s future success.
Our mission is to enable the green transition through the development of bio-based, fossil-free graphite, a critical material for batteries and electrification. The world cannot transition to renewable energy without graphite, yet Europe currently faces soaring demand, unstable supply chains, and near-total dependence on imports. China controls around 92% of global graphite production, and a global supply deficit is expected by 2030. Without decisive action, Europe’s green transition faces severe risk.
Nordic Bio-Graphite offers a unique solution built on more than a decade of research at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology. This research has led to a breakthrough catalytic process enabling large-scale production of bio-based graphite from forest residuals. Our graphite has demonstrated strong potential for both battery and steel applications. The company has rapidly attracted interest from industrial clients and investors and recently secured funding for its pilot plant.
This is an opportunity to join a pioneering company at a critical stage, driving industrial innovation that directly contributes to a more sustainable and resilient European supply chain.

Key responsibilities
• Plan and execute the scale-up from pilot to semi-industrial and later commercial production
• Oversee plant design, construction, and commissioning in coordination with suppliers, contractors, and partners
• Lead the ongoing work at our newly constructed small-scale pilot plant, including recruitment and onboarding of technical and operational staff
• Establish production systems, documentation, and quality control procedures
• Build and develop the production organization in line with company growth and industrialization strategy
• Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and industrial regulations
• Identify and manage technical and operational risks during the scale-up phase

Qualifications
• Critical: Experience from building or scaling up new production facilities, taking projects from design through commissioning and into operation
• Experience from a scale-up or early-stage industrial company is a strong plus, but similar experience from stand-alone projects within larger companies is also valuable
• At least 8 years of experience in relevant engineering or industrial leadership roles
• Background can be from a wide range of sectors such as process, mining, chemical, energy, materials, or manufacturing. The key requirement is having led the setup of some form of production operation
• Deep understanding of process engineering, plant design, and industrial operations
• Degree in engineering, process engineering, or equivalent
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving start-up environment with limited structure and high ownership
• Strong leadership and communication skills
