Senior Data Engineer – Oncology Analytics Platform

Dataingenjör

RaySearch develops innovative software solutions to improve cancer care. About 1000 clinics in more than 40 countries use RaySearch software to improve treatments and quality of life for patients. RaySearch was founded in 2000 and is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. The headquarters is located in Stockholm, with subsidiaries in the US, Europe and Asia - Pacific. Our great staff is crucial for our success and we offer a fantastic working environment in modern offices, flexibility and good opportunities for development. We believe in equal opportunities, value diversity and work actively to prevent discrimination.
RaySearch develops software that supports cancer treatment at hospitals and radiotherapy clinics worldwide.
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to work on RayIntelligence, an oncology analytics platform helping radiotherapy clinics turn data into actionable insights.About RayIntelligence
Radiotherapy clinics generate large amounts of clinical and operational data every day, but much of this information remains difficult to access, analyze, and act upon. RayIntelligence is designed specifically for radiotherapy clinics, bringing together data from treatment planning systems, oncology information systems, and other clinical and operational sources.
The platform enables clinics to analyze treatment workflows, patient volumes, machine utilization, resource planning, treatment patterns, and long-term outcomes. By making data more accessible and reliable, RayIntelligence helps clinics understand their operations, learn from past treatments, and continuously improve care.
For healthcare analytics to create value, clinics need confidence in the data they use. RayIntelligence ensures consistent metrics, understandable insights, and traceable data from source to result. Already deployed at customer sites, the platform is continuously expanding its analytical capabilities and adoption worldwide.
About the Role
The role spans data ingestion, integration, transformation, analytical data modeling, and the implementation of new analytics use cases.
Working in healthcare brings unique engineering challenges. Data quality, traceability, reproducibility, validation, and risk management are key aspects of our software development process. While RayIntelligence is not a medical device, we apply many of the same engineering principles and quality practices used across RaySearch.
Unlike internal analytics teams, we are building a product for environments where we do not control the source systems. This requires us to handle limited access to real-world customer data, variations between customer environments, and the challenge of creating analytics that clinics can understand and trust.
Today, the platform focuses on analytics and reporting use cases, with future AI and machine learning capabilities building on the foundations being developed. RaySearch supports the use of modern AI-assisted development tools where appropriate, while maintaining the quality standards and engineering rigor required in healthcare software.
Responsibilities
Capture and integrate data from clinical and operational source systems
Design, build, and maintain data ingestion and transformation pipelines
Develop analytical data models supporting product capabilities and customer use cases
Implement new analytics capabilities using and Python
Contribute to architecture and design decisions related to scalability, maintainability, and data quality
Improve observability, traceability, and reliability across the platform
Ensure that metrics, transformations, and data flows can be understood, tested, and verified
Participate in validation, testing, and risk-management activities appropriate for healthcare software environments

Are you passionate about improving cancer care by making complex, safety-critical systems work seamlessly in real clinical practice? As a Clinical Validation Specialist at RaySearch, you’ll help turn clinical and technical insight into safer, smarter integrations between RayCare and cutting-edge treatment delivery devices. By designing and validating realistic workflows, uncovering edge cases, and ensuring treatment data flows correctly between systems, you directly shape software used in oncology centers worldwide—helping thousands of patients receive safer, more efficient treatments every day.
About RayCare
RayCare is our next-generation oncology information system, built to bring order, clarity, and efficiency to some of the most complex workflows in modern cancer care. Used in clinics around the world, RayCare supports every step of the patient journey—from the first registration to treatment delivery and follow-up.
Designed together with leading cancer centers, RayCare helps physicians, physicists, treatment planners and therapists coordinate their work, access the right information at the right time, and deliver care safely and efficiently. The system integrates deeply with RayStation and external treatment delivery devices, enabling seamless data flow through HL7, DICOM, and dedicated device interfaces. You appreciate a role that combines hands-on testing, analytical problem-solving, and real clinical logic.
You don’t need to be an expert in everything from day one. What we value most is your curiosity, your willingness to learn, and your ability to take ownership when validating real-world treatment workflows.
We believe you’ll thrive in this role if you have:
A master’s degree in medical physics or a similar technical or clinical field, or equivalent experience working with medical software or systems in healthcare.

Description of Doctoral Candidate Project DC17

Radiotherapy is a fundamental modality in oncology treatment, typically delivered over multiple fractions across several weeks. Throughout the treatment course, patients may exhibit substantial anatomical modifications (such as tumour regression or weight loss) as well as biological and functional changes within both malignant and healthy tissues. These dynamic variations can compromise the precision and therapeutic efficacy of radiation delivery, making the initial treatment plan suboptimal and necessitating adaptive strategies to maintain clinical outcomes.

Current treatment planning and adaptation strategies in radiotherapy predominantly focus on the physical dose distribution delivered to the patient. While effective to some extent, these approaches offer limited personalization and frequently neglect individual biological variability, such as tumour response dynamics and normal tissue sensitivity.

This project seeks to enhance both the efficacy and personalization of radiotherapy by integrating biological modelling with conventional dose-based planning. Specifically, it will focus on developing methodologies that leverage biological information and imaging biomarkers for optimizing the initial treatment plan and guide adaptive strategies throughout the treatment course.

The project has three main components:

1. Robust radiobiological optimization – Improving initial treatment planning by considering not only dose but also radiobiological models that predicts how tumours and healthy tissues respond to radiation, while accounting for underlying uncertainties.
2. Functional imaging integration – Using advanced imaging (e.g., PET/fMRI combined with CT or other anatomical imaging) to monitor both anatomical changes and tissue responses, enabling adaptation of the radiotherapy treatment based on both anatomical and biological indicators.
3. Biologically guided adaptive planning – Combining these approaches into a research prototype of a commercial treatment planning system for individualised initial treatment planning and adaptive treatments, accounting for underlying geometrical and biological uncertainties.

By incorporating biological and imaging data, this project aims to enable more personalized and adaptive radiotherapy treatments, moving beyond traditional dose-based methods.

The successful candidate will be employed at RaySearch Laboratories under the supervision of Jakob Ödén and Albin Fredriksson and will join the Research Department, which currently comprises 29 members. The candidate will also be enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Medical Radiation Physics at Stockholm University and become part of its research group under the academic supervision of Prof. Iuliana Toma-Dasu. This unique collaboration offers a diverse and stimulating research environment, with access to offices and resources at both institutions, located in Hagastaden, Stockholm’s Life Science Hub, within walking distance of each other.

Your profile

Requirements:

• MSc who has excelled in a relevant field: applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, computer science, physics or similar discipline
• Knowledge and interest in programming and applied mathematics
• Excellent communication skills in English

Meriting:

• Experience in radiotherapy and/or functional imaging
• Experience in mathematical optimization and/or algorithms
• Programming skills in C# or C++

Our great staff is crucial for our success and we offer a fantastic working environment in modern offices, flexibility and good opportunities for development. We believe in equal opportunities, value diversity and work actively to prevent discrimination.

RaySearch participates in the European doctoral training network UPLIFT, which addresses challenges and new opportunities in bringing upright treatments to the clinic. In total, 15 renowned partners from clinics, academia, and industry collaborate within the network with the aim of educating 19 PhD students. One of the young scientists will be located at RaySearch HQ in Stockholm and will work on mathematical optimization research for upright treatment planning.

For more information on the UPLIFT project visit the official webpage: Home - Uplift.

About the project: Advanced upright treatment planning

About 20 million patients are diagnosed with cancer each year, and this number is projected to reach about 30 million by 2040. Half of these receive radiation therapy as part of their treatment. Transitioning from a recumbent position, where the patient lies on a treatment couch, to upright treatments could provide both clinical and cost efficiency gains for these treatments and could help accommodate the increasing need for radiation therapy treatments.

The goal of this PhD project is to develop new mathematical methods and prototype software that will be used to perform research studies within the realm of upright radiotherapy. The project will involve mathematical optimization and computer science, as well as radiotherapy physics. Software development in languages such as C++, C# and Python will be an integral part of the project.

Three examples of possibilities and challenges posed by upright treatments are the following:

• For protons and light ions, a main topic is upright arc therapy, where the beam is delivered from a multitude of directions, preferably while the patient is rotated. Proton and light ion arc therapy in itself is an emerging field in radiation therapy, and the move to upright treatments is anticipated to facilitate the adoption of this type of treatments. Advancements on the accelerator side, such as multi-leaf collimated arcs and machines with fast energy switching can push this development forward, and versatile optimization algorithms for such accelerators have the potential to set a new state-of-the-art in ion treatments.
• For photons, the treatment machines have the potential to become even more compact and allow for faster collimation, and the possibility to translate the patient vertically while rotating opens for helical arcs. To reap the benefit of these new degrees of freedom, new optimization methods are needed.
• New uncertainties arising in upright positions, including challenges regarding patient positioning and organ motion, should be accounted for in the treatment planning process. Extension and use of the integrated algorithms for robust optimization in RayStation will be part of this research.

The PhD student will be affiliated with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and follow the doctoral program in Applied and Computational Mathematics (KTH | Doctoral program). The department has around 30 active PhD students, which can serve as an additional network to the ones at RaySearch and the UPLIFT community. A Swedish PhD program normally runs over 4-5 years and the position is funded throughout this time. The PhD student will be employed by RaySearch with a competitive salary.

Within UPLIFT there will be continuous collaboration with other doctoral candidates, especially from GSI (Germany), CNAO (Italy) and Centre Léon Bérard (France), where the doctoral candidate will have longer or shorter secondments. A natural point of collaboration will include evaluation of the newly developed methods by retrospective planning on clinical patient cases.

Applicant profile

• MSc with strong academic records in relevant field: applied mathematics, computer science, physics, medical physics or similar

• Interest in programming and strong programming skills

• Fluency in English

It is an advantage (but not a requirement) if you also:

• Have experience in C++ and/or C# programming
• Have experience from mathematical optimization and/or radiation physics

Application process

If you find this position interesting and would like to work in an exceptional, international, strongly innovative environment, please apply through the form on this webpage.
